Considering Robotic Process Automation (RPA)

Posted: 12/02/2017 - 01:09

Customers embark on an RPA journey for a variety of reasons. For some it's about not being able to grow organically with the traditional models of adding new people into the mix. For others, it can be a desire to achieve greater cost certainty and overcome the challenges of moving work offshore and the uncertainty that it brings into today's political climate. Regardless of the reasons why companies embark on the journey, a common outcome is sought -  a high-quality service with a reduced cost of operating.

We’ve addressed a common set of questions clients typically ask when deciding to embark on an RPA journey:

There's generally a recurring question of “What is RPA?” and "Does it work?" There are many educational references available that offer robust education on these topics.  Symphony authors an RPA blog with in-depth insights on this and additional topics relative to all phases within the RPA journey.   We also recommend reading up on case studies and attend conferences on the topics to become educated.  It is also helpful to speak to clients of any providers you're looking to use.

Another common question we hear is "What could RPA mean for my business?" To answer that, a detailed look at operations is in order. Understanding which processes are suitable for RPA and developing the potential business case for automation will help you understand the opportunity. Don’t just consider the traditional cost savings but also consider additional non-financial benefits as well. In doing so, build up a business case, an implementation plan, and operating model.

Planning your RPA solution carefully can help to ensure a successful program. Try to keep an objective eye on your resources and look to the experts for advice. We help our clients develop a strategic plan with a Vision Workshop, where we identify areas of opportunity for RPA and align key stakeholders.  In our years of experience, we have found that a detailed strategy increases success with RPA roll outs.
