(Editor’s note from the Spring 2014 edition: Outsource #35 – A Giant Leap)
Depending on who’s doing the talking and when, robotic process automation could be a quantum leap for outsourcing which could eventually transform the entire nature of employment (and by extension the very socioeconomic fabric of the world today); or is nothing special and certainly nothing new, little more than glorified spreadsheet macros. In this issue’s cover story, for our biggest-ever feature, we go in search of answers, turning to the Outsource community for clarification on what is without doubt the hottest topic on the business services block right now. Turn to page 10 for more.
Beyond robotics, within these pages those looking to consume outsourcing thought leadership will find, as always, a smörgåsbord – with the Scandinavian theme prominent thanks to our interview with ITOSDA’s Alexander Reay (page 44), the first in a series of reports from ITOSDA itself (page 102) and the announcement of our involvement in the Nordic IT Sourcing & Innovation 2014 event (see page 105 for more). Meanwhile other interviews this quarter include those with Gartner’s VP BPO Research, Cathy Tornbohm (page 32) who reports on the evolution of BPO and pitfalls ahead; and Ed Barry, CEO of OnProcess (page 74), on leveraging disruptive technology and ensuring the right talent comes on board.
Elsewhere we cover the nature of partnership (page 48); “wicked” problems (page 54); the big issue with business ecosystems (page 66); and data protection (page 82) – among much else.
