The Open and Endava: Driving Excellence
Organised by The R&A, The Open is golf’s oldest championship. It needs a world-class website to provide up-to-the-second results and information. The development of The Open golf site moved to Endava in 2009 because of their strong digital services and competitive pricing. Over 200,000 people attended The Open in 2014, while millions more followed the action at home, online or on the move.
The website presents a huge challenge; it must perform consistently and effectively all year round, as well as managing the huge peaks in traffic that occur when the Championship tees off every July. The site must be ready to deal with the spikes of hits in the autumn when tickets go on sale. A cost-effective approach is needed to deal with the huge leap in visitors during the event, balanced out with the visits that occur the rest of the year.
This year alone, the site received 9.6 million unique visits — almost three times the volume in 2009 when the project was first outsourced to Endava. The site is constantly being developed and tested, and to prepare for the week-long event, the team develop a test environment to simulate the tournament happening in real time.
